Summary
Bruce was born at Surrey, England and came to Australia in 1853, working initially at the customs warehouse in Adelaide, before becoming the overseer of a Flinders Ranges property. He went on to marry and become a successful pastoralist, running sheep and cattle on his South Australian station. He wrote numerous poems, some of which were collected in The Dingoes and Other Tales (1875) A Voice from the Australian Bush (1877) and Echoes from Coondambo (1893) as well as popular songs, two plays, an autobiography and one historical novel, Benbonuna: A Bush Tale of the Fifties (1900).
