Summary
Swan was born in County Monaghan, Ireland, and educated at Glasgow University. He emigrated to the Victorian goldfields in 1854; later on, he developed his literary interests in Melbourne, becoming a close friend of Henry Kingsley and Marcus Clarke. A successful journalist, Swan was editor of the Ararat and Pleasant Creek Advertiser and the Stawell News. His stories appeared in the Queenslander and Sydney Mail, and his books include Tales of Australian Life (1875), Luke Miver's Harvest (1879) - for which the Sydney Mail awarded a prize of 100 pounds - Lucy Ross's Sacrifice (1881) and A Couple of Cups Ago, and other stories (1885).
