Summary
Dyson was born near Ballarat, Victoria, moving frequently throughout his childhood as his father pursued mining work in the surrounding areas. He contributed his first short stories to the Bulletin in the mid-1880s and in 1889 his mining tale, 'The Golden Shanty', was chosen as the title story for the Bulletin Christmas collection. He took up writing full time, earning a comfortable living as a freelancer. Dyson published countless poems and short stories in the Bulletin, the Lone Hand and Melbourne Punch, often drawing on his early experiences in gold fields and mining towns for material. His stories also appear in Below and On Top (1898), Fact'ry 'Ands (1906) and other collections, and his novels include In the Roaring Fifties (1906) and The Missing Link (1908). His literary output declined after 1919 due to illness.
