Summary
Favenc was born in Surrey, England, and was educated in Berlin and Oxford. He came to Australia in 1864, working on north Queensland stations and, in 1877, leading an expedition to Darwin. His first book, The History of Australian Exploration 1788-1888 (1888), became a major reference work. He published around 130 short stories in a number of colonial journals, including the Bulletin which had printed an early collection, The Last of Six: Tales of the Austral Tropics (1893). Favenc is best known for his adventure and fantasy fiction, usually set in the Australian interior, the tropics, or the Pacific.
